Qualcomm introduced the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chip at IFA 2024, which is expected to make high-end laptops more accessible to users.
This 8-core Snapdragon X Plus shares the same architecture as the more powerful 12-core X Elite and 10-core X Plus versions that Qualcomm previously introduced. Although it lacks the advanced graphics capabilities of the higher-end models, the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is ideal for entry-level laptops. It provides a good balance between performance and efficiency, perfect for users who don't require top-tier graphics.
The 8-core Snapdragon X Plus comes with 30 MB of CPU cache, 12 MB less than its stronger counterparts. It also has less than half the GPU power for gaming and productivity applications, resulting in approximately 50% lower graphics performance, according to Qualcomm's tests. For CPU tasks, it is about 20% less powerful than the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite. However, it still matches the productivity performance of the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus chip.
Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, stated: “The first and best Copilot+ PCs powered by our Snapdragon X Series platform promise to usher in a new era for personal computing, driven by our innovative NPU. With the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus, we are extending these transformative AI experiences to a broader audience.” He added, “Delivering best-in-class performance and superior battery life through our energy-efficient custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU. We are proud to partner with leading OEMs and global retail partners to expand our portfolio, allowing both enterprise customers and consumers to benefit from these advancements.”
The integrated GPU supports up to three external displays and ensures excellent graphics and vibrant images. At the heart of the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is the powerful 45 TOPS NPU, which delivers exceptional AI processing power and top-tier performance. Combined with advanced connectivity features, this platform elevates productivity in ultra-mobile devices to new heights.
The 8-core Snapdragon X Plus is expected to further lower the price of Copilot+ laptops, making them even more affordable than Qualcomm’s ARM chips released earlier this year. Laptops featuring this processor will soon be released, including the Asus Vivobook S 15, priced at around $899, significantly cheaper than the $1,300 price of the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite variant. Similarly, Dell's Inspiron 14 will also be priced at $899, making them excellent options for those seeking solid performance without spending too much.
